Can BVSD be trusted with $300million? It's gonna be a close one folks.....

BVSD will most likely be putting a bond on the November, 2006 ballot asking for nearly $300 million for capital improvements of schools in the district.  There is no doubt our school buildings could use these funds, but can the district be trusted with the appropriate distribution of such funds?  Some in the community are doubtful.....

The district's capital imporovement planning committee has spent nearly two years documenting needs at schools across the district.  On June 13th, 2006 the BVSD board agreed to go ahead with the their recommendation to ask the voters for a $296 million tax increase in November.  They will vote on the wording of the bond in August.  This is the largest school tax increase BVSD has historically asked for.  A telephone poll of 408 active voters by Talmey-Drake found that 59% would support a $300 million tax increase.  Such ballots typically need 60% support in pre-election polls to pass.  Part of the above bond would include demolishing Casey Middle School in Central Boulder, and BVSD states they will rebuild on the same site.  There is no doubt our schools need this money.  BVSD's history does not support that they can be accountable with it.

What would you need from BVSD to support such a bond?  Go to bvsdwatch.org for more...

Independent Report To Retain/Reopen a Neighborhood School In BVSD

SOS-Mapleton Group has written a  report that identifies discrepancies with BVSD’s Enrollment Analysis and discusses the results and implications of the census and petition campaign conducted in the former Mapleton attendance area, summarizes research in support of neighborhood schools, and recommends courses of action to be taken with respect to the currently vacant Mapleton school building.  Mapleton school can and should be a thriving neighborhood school.

Mapleton still sits empty, three years after it's closure, while overcrowding prevails at nearby schools.  Students are being turned away at Mapleton's neighbor schools.  It is important that we continue to get this building open again as a school.  DO NOT LET THIS HISTORIC BUILDING GO TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER - KEEP IT IN OUR COMMUNITY!  Please contact us if you would like to help info@SOSBoulderValley.org

"Closures of a long-standing school can have devastating consequences for established neighborhoods. The school symbolizes the neighborhood. You take out the school, and it’sthe beginning of the decline of the neighborhood. You’ve got to have a school to have a neighborhood."  NTHP.org
